FAQs
Everyone can benefit from chiropractic care! Consider this: who needs a normal, balanced, unimpeded flow of life-sustaining energy in their body in order to live life to its fullest and enjoy optimum health? Everybody, that’s who! People who have headaches, back, neck or shoulder pain need chiropractic. People who have chronic illnesses can benefit from chiropractic. Infants, toddlers, teenagers, middle-aged, the elderly… everyone can benefit from chiropractic—even people who feel great—because achieving and maintaining a healthy, balanced, fully-functioning nervous system is one of the most important things you can do to protect your health. We ALL need regular chiropractic care!
It’s important to understand that chiropractors don’t treat or cure illness. Their primary goal is to locate, assess, and correct spinal subluxations in order to help reopen the normal pathways of nerve impulse conduction to and from the brain and every cell throughout the body. After the impulse interference is eliminated through spinal adjustments, the body’s ability to heal itself is greatly improved. Just as dis-ease is caused by interference in the normal flow of electrical impulses, health depends greatly on having a satisfactory flow of this vital energy. Chiropractors restore the proper function of the nervous system, allowing the body to find a natural balance so that it is better able to heal itself by fending off bacterium and viruses more effectively and efficiently. While chiropractors cannot heal you, they can help you achieve better health and functionality.
When a vertebra is displaced, it can interfere with the normal path of the electrical impulse through the nerves close to where the displacement has occurred. If the affected nerve is one whose job it is to carry a message to the liver, the function of the liver can be adversely altered, often resulting in physical symptoms such as digestive disturbance. If the affected nerve is one that carries instructions from the brain to the heart, the heart’s function may be compromised.
Obviously, proper nerve conduction is essential to overall health. The fitness, strength, and functionality of every part of the body all depend on the unimpeded flow of nerve impulses. If the direct flow of messages to and from the brain via the nervous system is interrupted or interfered with, the result is dis-ease in the body, which affects the body’s ability to function at optimum performance.
Because the nerves traveling down and branching out of the spinal column go to every organ and cell in the body, constantly sending important messages to and from the brain, chiropractic adjustments are beneficial for the entire body. There are nerves that control regular heartbeat and breathing, and there are nerves that send messages alerting us to pain and distress. Having regular spinal adjustments positively influences your overall health and well being, and ensures proper alignment of your spine so that nerve impulse interference doesn’t happen.
Because most spinal manipulation techniques use gentle pressure rather than force, very few patients feel discomfort during the adjustment. However, one thing that can be upsetting is the “popping” sounds your body may make during an adjustment. There’s no need for concern! The “pops” you hear as your spine is realigning itself are simply small pockets of gas escaping from the spaces between the displaced bones, and are completely normal. Once flexibility is restored to the vertebrae, you may notice a decrease in the “popping” sounds. Until that happens, take comfort in the “pop!” It’s a good indication that the adjustments are doing what they are intended to do. To make the most of your chiropractic adjustment, it’s important to relax. Tensing up can cause mild discomfort in the muscles. So relax, breathe, and “pop” your way to optimum health!
